The International Ergonomics Association (IEA) defines ergonomics (or human factors) as the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data, and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance. An Ergonomist is an ergonomics/human factors professional who addresses issues and challenges with sufficient consideration of all of the relevant elements of ergonomics/human factors by having a broad understanding of these areas.
Who is the CCCPE? The Canadian College for the Certification of Professional Ergonomists (CCCPE) functions as the National certifying body for Ergonomists in Canada and was established in 1998 by the Association of Canadian Ergonomists (ACE). Certification through the CCCPE is voluntary and provides successful candidates with the designation “CCPE” (Certified Canadian Professional Ergonomist), or “AE” (Associate Ergonomist) for those who have not yet accumulated enough years of work experience. The CCCPE consists of Board members throughout Canada who have knowledge and experience in ergonomics/human factors across various industry sectors. These Board members volunteer their time to promote certification and to review applications for certification to ensure that applicants meet a consistent set of standards in education, professional competencies, and work experience across the full scope of ergonomics and human factors practice. The CCCPE is now recognized internationally by the IEA as the only recognized ergonomics certifying body in Canada. This recognition indicates that the CCCPE has met international level standards for certification criteria and process, and ensures CCCPE designated Ergonomists adhere to a Code of Ethics.
A CCPE /AE designation demonstrates that an Ergonomist has met a high level of expertise, professional knowledge, and experience in the field of ergonomics/human factors to employers, clients, and peers. The CCPE/AE designation signifies a commitment to continued excellence in professional practice. The designation also builds professional credibility and trust, helps to protect consumers, and validates quality expertise with those outside the profession. Companies not only in Canada but internationally are looking for candidates with the CCPE designation and the Board works to promote the designation on an ongoing basis.
Applicants are required to submit transcripts, employment histories and work products indicating that specific educational requirements and professional competencies have been met. The process provides an opportunity for the applicant to review and develop relevant competencies for current and/or future career goals, and to obtain verification of their knowledge and expertise.
The term Ergonomist is not regulated in Canada. The CCPE designation is the highest standard for ergonomics certification in Canada. The designation demonstrates that an Ergonomist has met the College requirements to ensure the provision of professional practice and quality service. CCPEs specialize in a variety of services including, but not limited to, office assessments, risk assessments specific to industry (i.e. manufacturing, agriculture, and health care), architectural and product design reviews, cognitive/human factors evaluations, human-computer interaction evaluations, and training. CCPEs and AEs must adhere to a Code of Ethics instituted by the College and are thereby held accountable for their professional practice. The Code of Ethics outlines the standards for practice to ensure protection of the client and the public. If a complaint is received, the College will investigate and take action where appropriate. CCPEs must meet comprehensive continuing education requirements to ensure their continuing professional development.
Are you wondering if your Ergonomist meets these high standards? The CCCPE website maintains a registry of all CCPEs and AEs in good standing and is searchable by Province and City.
